Foreign languages and your own
A pupil can translate a sentence and still not understand it when somebody says it at normal speed. That is not a vocabulary problem.
A textbook exercise has no context
A translated sentence without a situation is not remembered and cannot be used. What is missing is the part of a language that is learnt worst from paper: intonation, pace, and what people actually say in that situation.
Ideas
What you can film
The situation
The language in context — at the station, at the doctor's, ordering something.
The same thing in several languages
The same scene, a different language. It shows what is genuinely different and what is only named differently.
Native speed
The same sentence slowly and then normally. That is exactly the difference between “I know it” and “I understand it”.
The mistake you make
The typical mistake speakers of your own language make, and how it should sound.
How it works
What to watch out for
- A character's voice can be created from its description.
- The interface is available in several languages, and the voice can be generated in the language being learnt.
